Hamilton where different age groups live

The 2018 census data on age is separated into four age groups. In Hamilton, 21% of people are under the age of 15 years  25% are between 15 and 30 years old, 42% are aged between 30 and 65 years, and 12% are older than 65 years (density 1,450 people per km² (ppkm²)). At the small town level (census ‘Statistical Area’ (SA2)), Hamilton East is similar: 21% of people are under the age of 15 years, 24% are between 15 and 30 years, 44% are aged between 30 and 65 years, and 12% are older than 65 years (density 1,779 ppkm²). This is followed by Maeroa, with 21% of people under the age of 15 years, 26% between 15 and 30 years old, 43% aged between 30 and 65 years, and 10% older than 65 years (density 2,911 ppkm²).

The census has produced a good interactive map, which shows where different age groups are increasing or decreasing. The maps in this post loosely divide the population into three age groups, to identify concentrations in various areas. The maps above show that Temple View (271 ppkm²), Chartwell (2,790 ppkm²) and Porrit (2,135 ppkm²) have both a healthy number of children and older people. Crawshaw (3,766 ppkm²) and Rototuna North (912 ppkm²) both have high proportions in the under 15 year age group (29% of the population).  Older people are more concentrated in Flagstaff East (1,955 ppkm²), with 23% older than 65 years, 42% aged between 30 and 65 years, 15% between 15 and 30 years old, and 20% of the population under the age of 15 years. The most extreme separation of young and old can be seen in Crawshaw and North Rototuna; both these areas have a low number (6% and 7% respectively) of over-65-year-olds, which is the opposite to St Andrews (1,556 ppkm²), with its high percentage of over-65-year-olds (33%) and low number of under-15-year-olds (17%).

This next maps shows the distribution of future leaders (15 to 30-year-olds) and existing leaders (30 to 65-year-olds). As one would expect, Greensboro (8,138 ppkm²), near the university, has 62% of its population aged between 15 and 30 years. For the dominant age group (30 to 65 years) Kirikiriroa (524 ppkm²), Flagstaff South (1,726 ppkm²), Frankton Junction (191 ppkm²) and Western Heights (2,719 ppkm²) all have 49% of their population in this age group. Te Rapa south (29 ppkm²) has 53% percent of its 114 residents in the 30 to 65 year age group. One of the outcomes I like on these maps is how these two age groups are both attracted to areas across the city, ranging from Frankton Junction (191 ppkm²), through Kirikiriroa (524 ppkm²) and Whitiora (2,803 ppkm²) to Claudelands (2,209 ppkm²).
